Frequently Asked Questions

When I want to know information about my child or their condition, I find myself searching Google, which I know is not the best. Do you have a place on the site that may supply that information?

Yes we do. It is on the Resources tab at the top. Click on Resources and you will find “Patient Education and Handouts” - or click here. This has a wealth of information on all topics, most of which you can download. And, it is updated regularly.

Sometimes I have to wait 45 minutes for my appointment, yet if I am late 20 minutes, I am at times forced to reschedule that day. This seems like a double standard?

Dr. Adams gives all the time a patient needs whether this is 15 minutes they were scheduled for or the  45 minutes they need. That will get him behind BUT he will do the same for your child.

What will I find under the About tab and what do they mean?

The About Us briefly explains who we are and our philosophy, which is the vision and beliefs of Riverview Pediatrics.

I have heard the term telemedicine, telehealth and Zoom frequently since the Coronavirus pandemic. Can you explain what telemedicine is and its function?

Telemedicine was already an outreach of primary care. It allows the physician and the patient to interact remotely concerning their health issues that can be handled without the patient physically being at the office. Many patients, especially during the pandemic, cannot make it to the office and telemedicine allows them similar care.

I just got billed for my telemedicine visit a few days ago. I didn’t actually see my doctor. Why do I have to pay for it?

While telemedicine will never replace actual office visits, it is billed as an office visit.

How do I schedule these phone visits?

Telemed visits are scheduled either for the morning or the afternoon.

I called and was told I could have a telemed rather than an office visit. I called at 9 am but I didn’t get a return call until approximately 4 pm. Why is there such a long wait?

Most telemed visits are not scheduled at any particular time. In office patients have to be scheduled and are seen during those time slots. Dr. Adams will get to the telemed visits throughout the day. You may ask for a morning or afternoon appointment and Dr. Adams will try to call you during those times.

I do not think my problem can be handled over the phone. Is that my only option?

Telemedicine is but one option. You may still make an office visit.

My friend told me her child had a Zoom call. What is the difference and do you offer Zoom visits?

A Zoom visit allows a two-way video communication between the doctor and the patient in real-time. While this can provide extra information, there are downsides to a Zoom visit. The patient must have a computer, internet access, a cam and be somewhat proficient with computers. Zoom visits also require scheduling which can be difficult during a regular office day. We encourage email when a picture is necessary.

I thought primary care doctors only did medicine and didn’t do mental health. Wouldn’t my child be better off going to a psychiatrist or psychologist?

Yes, he or she probably would. The problem is it can be very difficult finding a psychiatrist or psychologist who has openings and accepts your insurance. The Bangor and Brewer area is underserved when it comes to mental health specialists.

Can you prescribe the same medications that a psychiatrist or Acadia can?

Any licensed physician can prescribe the same medications.

Does your site provide information about my newborn or answers to basic health conditions of my children?

It lists tips and other information for caring for your newborn.

Patient education provided by the AAP provides information related to your children. This information can be searched and may be able to download and print.

Our child is afraid of the doctor’s office. Any tips on this?

We recommend not telling your child they will not get shots at a well-child visit if they will. Playing with a toy doctor’s kit with your child can be helpful.

We have a video of a three-year-old patient going to the doctor, which can be viewed here. It shows how fun a visit can be. This “sicker to sticker” video can be watched the night before and/or the day of to prepare you child for the office visit.

When do you see your last patient?

While we schedule patients from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, we continue to see patients until all have been seen.

It states in your hours that most people will get a same day appointment. Is that true?

While most patients will get a same-day appointment, those calling prior to 2 pm and babies under six months can be seen on the same day.

How many doctors share call?

There are no other doctors in the practice therefore you will only reach me.

How can you stay sane being on call 24/7?

Fortunately, most of my patients leave messages or wait until the following day so I don’t get overloaded with calls.

Do you really return pages within ten minutes?

Nearly always. My call will show up private. Please be sure to unblock your phone to private calls.

How does the weekend work?

Weekend call is identical to after hours.

Can testimonials be anonymous or must they have the patient’s name?

We ask that you do not include your child’s name, but anonymous testimonials are frowned upon and testimonials should be verified with either your email or using Facebook, Google or Twitter.

Since they originate from Riverview Pediatrics’ website, won’t they mostly be positive?

I hope so.

Why the Insurance 101? Doesn’t my insurance just cover everything?

Well, yes and no. Your insurance company may only cover certain things while not paying your deductible and out of pocket expenditures. This is where reading the EOB can be helpful. If you have questions about your Explanation of Benefits, please do not hesitate to call our billing office.

Can I pay my bill online?

Yes, under insurance on the top menu, select Pay Online on the drop down menu - click here.

Why do I have a back balance. I pay my copay when I come in. My insurance covers the rest.

Another good reason to read the EOB. While you may pay your copay, the rest of the bill may not be covered by the insurance. Deductibles and out-of-pocket charges add up quickly. And, there are some things they flat don’t cover.

How will I know when I have a back balance?

You will receive a monthly invoice.

What if I can’t pay the entire amount?

We understand there will be times people find themselves unable to pay the entire back balance. We are always happy to set up a payment arrangement.

If I wish to fill out the new patient paperwork before my first appointment, are the forms online?

Yes. You can find the forms under Forms on the main menu. You can fill out the first six forms and submit them. They will automatically be sent to our office. We can also email the forms to you.
